`In-kind` donations of clothing, furniture, toys and household items for the refugees are offered almost daily. We are very happy to receive this generosity from the people of Hamburg. Unfortunately sufficient staff and premises to store and distribute are currently not available.
Donations for refugees
In principle, monetary and material donations within Germany are also tax deductible. The impressive donations for the many refugees currently coming to Germany, is also supported by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
In which it has, in a letter dated 22 September 2015, advised the government tax revenue offices, to recognize and accept the generous monitory donations practice. For refugee aid measures between the 1 August 2015 and 31 December 2016 the following regulations shall apply:
  • The simplified donations receipt shall also apply to amounts of more than 200 Euro.
  • All non-profit organizations may collect donations and simplified proof facilitation will apply.
  • Non-profit organizations can also collect donations though a ‘trust’ account. If the collected funds are forwarded to a charitable organization for aid to refugees, then they are tax-deductible as special expenses. “This applies for example when several NGO’s come together, and form a framework for a donation campaign where money for refugees is collected into a single account.”
  • Employees can also donate part of their salary. In this case the employer retains a part of the gross salary and transfers it directly to a non-profit organization for the benefit of refugee aid. This amount must be neither deducted for wage tax or social security contributions.
